How much does it cost for a referral?

Referrals are free.

Once you are referred to an attorney, there is a $35.00 fee for the first half hour consultation.

Exceptions are made for clients who have cases in the following areas of practice:

  • personal injury,
  • social security,
  • medical malpractice,
  • veteran's and military law,
  • unemployment or workers' compensation.

Additional attorney fees are between you and the attorney. Please note, that the LRIS does not set the attorneys’ fees.

Do I have to work with the attorney I am referred to?

No, you’re under no obligation to hire the attorney you have been referred to, just as the attorney is under no obligation to take you on as a client.

How long will it take for an attorney to contact me?

You should be contacted within three working days from the time you submit the referral. If you are not contacted in that time frame, call the LRIS office at 1-800- 342-3661.

What types of law do the attorneys on your LRIS practice?

The attorneys on the NYSBA LIRS practice in more than 40 areas of law including:

How do I know the LRIS attorneys are attorneys in good standing?

Each attorney on the NYSBA LRIS is vetted by staff before being accepted on a referral panel. Every attorney’s bar registration is verified to ensure they are eligible to practice law in New York State.

Additionally, proof of insurance MUST be submitted to the LRIS by the attorney before they can begin receiving referrals. Attorneys on the LRIS panel also must provide proof that they operate an office in the counties the NYSBA LRIS serves.

What if I have an issue or need some additional assistance?

Please call our helpful and friendly staff at the NYSBA LRIS, 1-800- 342-3661 Monday through Friday.

Phone lines are open at 9:30 am until 12:00 pm and then again at 1:30 pm until 3:30 pm. On Fridays, the phones close at noon.
